New World is a proud supporter of Fairtrade, we stock one of the largest selection Fairtrade products nationwide-over 100 products–from vanilla, ice cream, bananas, chocolate, tea, coffee, coconut drinks and kombucha.

By New World

Last year, New World sold nearly 5 million Fairtrade Certified products across all our stores nationwide.

Fairtrade is about better working conditions and sustainable livelihoods for farmers and workers in developing countries.  Not only does Fairtrade provide fair and stable prices, it also provides farming communities with an additional sum of money, which enables them to invest in social, business and environmental projects that are important to them and to plan for a brighter tomorrow.  Last year New World, through sales of Fairtrade products New World contributed over a quarter of a million in additional funds to support farming communities.

New World were the first nationwide retailer to stock All Good Fairtrade bananas in 2010.

Over the past six years New World has sold over 34 million All Good Fairtrade bananas and have put over $500,000 back in development funding for banana growing communities in Ecuador.  This includes provision of medical clinics, school teachers, a special needs school, school supplies and much more.

“We are very thankful for the support that Foodstuffs offer us by buying our All Good Fairtrade bananas. With your help we have a stable economy and our fruit is valued at the right price. Without the sale of All Good Fairtrade Bananas our economy would collapse. I have been a small banana producer for 13 years in El Guabo and I hope to continue for many more. Thank you for the support from both All Good and Foodstuffs, I am very grateful.” - Washington Torres, El Guabo Cooperative.

Over 10% of all bananas sold in New World are now Fairtrade and has been the fastest growing banana category in New World over the last five years.

This is a great outcome given no Fairtrade bananas were sold in NZ before 2010.  All Good and New World aim to double this over the next five years.

We support Fairtrade because just like New World, Fairtrade embraces the cooperative model to empower farmers, which has strong synergies with how we work as a owner operator co-operative in New Zealand.

Fairtrade is also about provenance, connecting those that grow and make our food with those that consume it – both of which we are passionate about at New World.  It is also great to be able to support many pioneering locally owned NZ brands from Whittakers, Wellington Chocolate Factory and Ritual Tea in Wellington, to Inca-fe Coffee in New Plymouth and Nice Blocks and All Good Bananas in Auckland who make these great products.

And when New World shoppers can buy products that support New Zealand businesses and developing world farmers it’s just another thing that makes us as New Zealanders that little bit happier still!

Competition winners see Fairtrade farmers have future in the can

When we’re in our kitchens scooping coconut cream into a delicious curry or tantalizing dessert, it’s easy to forget how far it’s travelled before landing in the home pantry.

Last November, New World and Fairtrade joined forces to take a lucky Clubcard member–who was buying Fairtrade, of course!-to spend some time with coconut farmers in Samoa. David Silverton and his wife, Mary, were chosen at random for the chance to see exactly how Fairtrade is helping farmers in our Pacific neighborhood.

During the week-long trip David and Mary met coconut farmers from the Fairtrade certified Savai’i Coconut Farmers Association, saw their land and some of the challenges they face when collecting the coconuts, and followed their coconuts to the factory owned by local buyer Krissy Co., where the coconuts are canned and transported to New Zealand.

Mary said the eye-opening week reminded her exactly why she and her husband looked for Fairtrade products on New World shelves.

“Fairtrade is the perfect name for the organisation, as it does so much to support the locals in developing countries and to promote their products. It is obvious that anyone purchasing Fairtrade products is directly supporting the farmers to provide for their families,” Mary said.

“We felt very privileged to be able to visit the coconut farms, watch the farmers working and learn about their way of life. From what we saw and heard – we asked lots of questions – we realised what a subsistent life the locals lead, especially in comparison to our first world lives in New Zealand.”

Even when they were doing hard physical labour, Mary said the locals still managed to keep smiles on their faces as warm as the tropical weather.

“We learnt from talking to anyone we could that family, especially the children, and the church are focal points of life on these islands. Everyone was so warm and friendly, always smiling and with a wicked sense of humour.”

Fairtrade Premiums – a payment given to farmers’ groups for training, the purchase of new equipment or to invest in community projects, are paid on top of the price of their produce – helped the association buy new tools for their members last year, and implement soil rehabilitation projects in 2015.

Members also planted 50 new trees each in September and October last year. Even though it will be about six years before the trees are mature enough to produce fruit, the farmers are committed to ensuring their farms are sustainable for this generation – and the next.

That’s why New World is proud to stock Fairtrade products – as long as shoppers such as David and Mary are choosing Fairtrade, they’re also investing in a future for the farmers who produced them.

Look for Fairtrade coffee, tea, chocolate, hot chocolate, bananas, kombucha, ice blocks and icecream on New World shelves now.
