Swedish-style meatballs

Serves   4
Prep time: 15 mins
Cooking time: 30 mins

The Swedes do love a good meatball and these ones are super tasty and come with a delicious cream sauce. This is a great family meal that’s quick to prepare and a lovely change from the traditional Italian version.

Swedish-style meatballs

Ingredients

Method

Ingredients

Meatballs

  • 500 grams beef mince
  • ½ teaspoon allspice
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • ¼ cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 large clove garlic, minced
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • salt and pepper
  • olive oil
  • butter

Sauce

  • 40 grams unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 1½ cups beef stock
  • ¾ cup cream
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Method

Meatballs:

1. Combine all the ingredients, except the olive oil and butter, in a large bowl. Season with salt and pepper and mix well. Divide the mixture into 12 evenly sized portions and roll into balls.

2. Heat 1 tablespoon each of oil and butter in a large skillet or sauté pan on a medium heat. Add the meatballs and turn regularly until browned nicely and cooked through. Remove and set aside. Don’t wash the pan.

Sauce:

3. Add the butter and flour to the pan on a medium heat and mix until it browns, then slowly whisk in the beef stock and cream, then the mustard and Worcestershire sauce. Season to taste.

4. Gently return the meatballs to the pan, reduce to a simmer and cook in the sauce for a further for 8-10 minutes, or until the sauce has reduced slightly.

To serve:

Serve the meatballs with your choice of rice, pasta, mash or noodles and garnish with finely chopped parsley.
